Elephants in the Fog is Abinash Bikram Shah’s enthralling, heart-wrenching, and beautifullycrafted
debut feature film. Set in a small Nepalese village, we follow Pirati (played
extraordinarily by Pushpa Thing Lama), the matriarch of a third-gender Kinnar community, as
she searches for her missing daughter. Using the framework of a mystery-thriller, we watch Pirati
struggle to get answers, or even the slightest of sympathy, from the local police and townspeople.
Through extraordinary camerawork and hauntingly poignant performances, Abinash Bikram
Shah paints a vivid portrait of a marginalized community: misunderstood, discriminated against,
and pushed to the fringes of society. Elephants in the Fog succeeds not only as an artistic work
of cinema, but as a profoundly humanistic exploration of marginalization and the people forced
to live within its bounds.
