Polish filmmaker Michal Marczak follows a father’s investigation of his 16-year-old son’s disappearance. Krzysztof Dyminski went missing after being last seen on a bridge looking over the Vistula River in Poland 2023.
His father Daniel, in desperate need of answers, obsessively searches the thousand kilometre long river. This captivating, critically-acclaimed documentary depicts, with thoughtful care, a family torn by grief and uncertainty. Marczak documents Daniel’s search with stunning camerawork — capturing both the profound emotional toll felt by his subjects as well as the breathtaking shots of the nature surrounding them. He also seems to consciously choose to frame dutch angle shots, perhaps to emphasize Daniel’s world thrown off balance by tragedy. Countless foreboding wide shots of a riverscape cloaked in fog appropriately and symbolically remind us of the terrible cloud of uncertainty that haunts the Dyminski family. In addition to its stunning cinematography, Closure is flawlessly paced. It methodically builds our suspense, putting us in the shoes of the subjects as our craving for answers increases with each minute of film.
And despite how riveting and cinematic the film is, Marczak consistently treats his subjects with respect, putting their humanity above all else. Closure is a masterwork documentary and a truly beautiful examination of grief.
