Who killed Narin G**** ? takes a remarkably unconventional approach to the telling of a true-crime story. Directed by Ayçe Kartal, the surrealist animated short explores the real-life murder of eight-year-old Narin Güran in southeastern Turkey in 2024. The case, which prompted a 19-day national search, was shrouded in mystery with members of Narin’s family and community accused of concealing the truth. Fittingly, the film embraces that ambiguity, while expanding its focus beyond the crime itself in order to examine the far-reaching complicity that allowed it to remain unsolved for so long. Through its child-like imagery, Kartal touches on themes of lost innocence, dreamlike and nightmarish subjectivity, and the disturbing presence of monsters among us. The decision to exclude real life images, faces, locations, and even real names (with Narin’s own name censored in the title) gives Who killed Narin G**** terrifying universality.
