Set in Manipur, India in 2023, Fireflies in the Dark follows a pregnant woman, a lost boy, and a
cafe owner trapped amid a devastating outbreak of ethnic violence. As the conflict continues to
this day, director Yogesh Lohan captures the rising tensions and terrifying realities faced by
ordinary people in Manipur. Through natural lighting, hand-held camera-work, sprawling sets
and a large ensemble cast, Lohan creates a world that feels authentic, avoiding over-stylization.
This unvarnished approach, gives the film its power, offering a sobering glimpse at how quickly
the rhythms of ordinary life can be disrupted, helping us feel deep empathy for the victims of a
seemingly distant conflict.
