Not every political art is good art, but a clever work of art will always be political.
Fairouz Hasan’s gentle, intimate film is a clever work of art. It has no need to announce its politics. They are already there, embedded in the story. Her father has been imprisoned in Israeli prisons for the last 20 years. How does such an absence shape a child? What does it do to memory, to emotion? How do you make sense of a father who is present only through letters, photographs, and memories? How does a father maintain his parental role without being there?
Using letters exchanged with her father, his old letters, and conversations with her sisters, as the voice over, Fairouz takes us into a world where memory slowly wears out. Where words may say little yet carry so much.
Crumbling envelopes, images of old letters and grainy black-and-white photographs become keepers of the past. Against them, digital images mapping the vast network of prisons Israel uses to detain Palestinians bring us back to the present.
With the use of references to works from Mona Hatoum to stan Brakhage, Hasan quietly mixes past and present, memory and reality, absence, and presence to create a beautiful and intimate portrait of a father-daughter relationship that could have been.
