This joy ride of a film is a paean to Roger Corman (1926- 2024) and low-budget independent filmmakers.

Stratton-Twine and Kuhn have created a fun and farcical romp through Jim Baitte’s search for an elusive, unprecedented sound in film history. Baitte, a failing sound engineer, is dispatched to a remote island, following a previous sound engineer who had recently disappeared. After having been ferried by way of a circuitous route to the island, Baitte is greeted with creepy portending whispers, moaning winds, pirate tales, and unusual marine life.

Shot in black and white, the film has the all the markers of a cult classic. The co-writers/directors employ an array of schlock creative devices, exploitive B movie design in the graphics and titling, the fabulous use of shadow and light plus a Long John Silver accent for the salty pub denizen. This stormy and remote island somewhere off the coast of the Uk, has palm trees in the shadowy background. No one has worn a wig so well since the days of Monty Python. Stratton-Twine and Kuhn have seeded this tribute to low budget, independent films with so many amusing tropes and subtle gems it never gets dull.

Beyond the actors everything has a role to play, background, foreground, light, sound, dialogue, and graphics. Even the credits at the beginning and the end are entertaining. The humour and style in the story telling may not appeal to everyone. Those who do appreciate it are in for a reward.
