There are films that announce their directors’ talent with the very first shot, and A Girl Unknown is one of them. Its opening image, of a young girl flailing underwater, is composed with the assurance of a natural-born filmmaker, and things don’t go downhill from there: from the play of light on wet sand to the flapping of a hand-crafted kite to the elaborate mechanization of a fabric factory, writer-director Zou Jing uses the camera to fuse beauty and meaning. Set during the period of China’s one-child policy, the film gives us Lin Juan (Cao Ruofan), a young girl who has been adopted by one family and is soon passed off to another. The misfortune continues when the protagonist reaches 17 and, now played by Li Gengxi, is reclaimed by her birth family—only to find herself unvalued once again.

If there’s one significant flaw in A Girl Unknown, it’s Zou’s tendency toward short-term predictability: there are small story beats that are shopworn enough to telegraph their outcomes. That aside, this is a strong work, compelling enough to generate suspense despite the slow, episodic storytelling. What gives it distinction is Zou’s ability to craft images that ring with the threat of their cessation: the shots are beautiful enough to make cutting seem almost like a violation.
