January 8, 2020: amid violent conflict with the US, the Iranian military shoots down Flight PS752 after its takeoff from Tehran. The crime results in 176 casualties, most of them Persians, many of them citizens of Canada. Soran Mardookhi speaks of and for them in this film, which documents their grief and their determination to achieve justice for the outrage.
The Flight brings us up close to surviving family members in Toronto and Vancouver, and they speak eloquently and powerfully about the tragedy. For all of them, it has been devastating, and for some, it has been galvanizing: Mardookhi introduces us to a society formed to offer mutual support and fight for legal accountability. Things come to a rousing climax after the death of Mahsa Amini in Iran: suddenly, Persians around the world are marching in the streets, and the bereaved subjects of this film find their movement folded into a larger call for justice. Like most conventionally made docs, the viewer is rewarded by listening more than watching; the words do more than the images to convey the loss and anger. Still, this is a poignant and provocative act of bearing witness.
