The beauty and power of short films lies in the fact that they do not need to conform to the structural and spatial constraints of feature productions. This gives filmmakers the freedom to pursue an idea and, on the other hand, to experiment with language, form, and technology.
Display Nature makes full and perfect use of the power of shorts.
In it, Nicholas Gebbe continues his masterful use of videogame language and aesthetics, combining it with live video images and CGI to create a reflection on the way we perceive nature in modern culture and through up to date technology and the terminology derived from it, the way it is used, and what it represents. He is using two avatars to sell us the digital image of nature, and the way it is produced and marketed to us. Slowly, he uses audio- visual elements to shatter and exposes the absurd conflict between nature and technology. As the work progresses the image and text begin to crumble.
