The carefully crafted cinematography and the tranquil music of the opening scenes of this film, set up a literal and metaphorical train ride of self-discovery for a graduating class of high school students. The class and their homeroom/ Latin teacher are on an end of term trip from France to Naples to visit the historic site of an ancient volcanic eruption.

The characters are interestingly and subtly developed through a clever and nuanced script. The narrative touches most of them, exposing their vulnerabilities, hopes and desires. Terrific on-site lectures as well as the political and social discussions among the students allows for interesting interplay.

The central character, Toni (played by Colas Quinard) is out of step with most of the class including the teacher. He is confronted with undeniable actualities which violate his core beliefs and expectations. Realities he drowns in no matter how hard he tries to bail himself out.

The trip is a sobering and maturing experience for the class members and will continue to affect many of them as they move on through their lives. Marine Atlan (director) and her co-writer, Anne Brouillet have created a well-acted, thought-provoking film which will linger on with the audience for quite some time.
