Montaigne, in the 16th century, wrote that he would never fear death again. He was unconscious after he was thrown off his horse. Filmakers, Henna Valky and Essu Lehtole, have interwoven animated visuals with first person narratives to illustrate, that whihch can not be described; near death experiences. Or, as Dr. Joseph Geraci states in the film “ encounters with death”. The subjects represent a wide cross-section of ages, backgrounds and life threatening events. What is phenomenal is the similarities within their experiences, despite their individual differences. They describe being outside themselves, drawn toward a light, a sense of freedom and no fear or distress. What brought them back was also similar; a thought, a memory or person. Some heard a door slam on the return to consciousness. The flow and transtion points of the animation are perfect tools to try to simulate what the subjects were experiencing. Coupled with well a integrated soundscape, an atmosphere of otherwordliness was created as an effective envelope within which the subjects could relate their stories. Anyone seeing this short film will probably come to the same conclusion as Montaigne did in 1570.
