This study of a middle-aged woman’s struggle to survive in bleak circumstances also portrays her fractured relationship with her rebellious teen daughter.
The title appears ironic, as the daughter – who finds her ambition thwarted – may have more traits in common with her mother than she realizes.
The two discover a bond through their shared love of dance, their sole means of self-expression and release..

This finely observed, of-the-moment story is remarkably poignant.
Six-year-old Nina’s parents take her to stay on her grandmother’s farm before themselves departing to fight in Ukraine’s defensive war against Russia. Nina learns that her grandmother is hiding a severely wounded Russian soldier, who befriends the youngster by offering a small, stuffed hedgehog toy.
Since the term “hedgehog” currently also refers to an improvised roadblock used to impede the advance of Russian armoured tanks, the film’s title lends resonance and irony to this quiet study and arresting final scene.
