Title: The Voice of Others (La voix des autres)
Year: 2023
Country: France
Language: Arabic, French with English Subtitles
Director: Fatima Kaci
Rim is a Tunisian interpreter working in France on asylum procedures. Every day, she translates the stories of exiled men and women, whose voices raise questions about her own history. She has a daughter, but cannot locate her husband
What I found so interesting in this film is that Rim in her translations of the asylum seekers to the authorities, finds it difficult to directly translate some of the questions from the interviewer to the asylum seekers, partly because of dialect translating Arabic to French, but also in a way that does not jeopardize their chances.
Language and dialect can be misinterpreted
She wants them to succeed, but sometimes they are not clear and may be contradicting what has already been submitted to the interviewer. At other times through the language and a different Arabic dialect, she may not translate the answer correctly.
She herself has been through the process and possibly made some mistakes that may have affected her locating her husband. Each interview is portrayed as being quite tense.
Strong acting and the interviews are very realistic, but a harsh process.
