This short film highlights the plight of homelessness and drug use and is not just a South African problem but related to many other countries. An excellent film conveying much to think about in just 7 minutes

I am Sheriff
Director: Teboho Edkins
Year: 2017
Runtime: 28 minutes
Language: Sesotho
Country: South Africa
Subtitle Language: English

A young transgender now named Sheriff, born as a female, travels around the countryside where he grew up speaking to children at school and to elders in the villages around Lesotho where he was born about his life. He explains how comfortable he is living as a male. He is well liked and, suprisingly, accepted by all around him. He was brought up by his grandmother who accepted who he was, and always preferred boy’s clothing to dresses as a very young child, An interesting and thoughtful film with beautiful images of Lesotho and its surroundings

Riel
 Director:  Zenobia Kloppers

Year: 2023
Runtime: 10 minutes
Language: Afrikaans, Nama
Country: South Africa.

Riel follows an ageing Khoekhoe matriarch as she invites her shy granddaughter to participate in the iconic riel dance of South Africa’s F irst Nations traditions. This highly rated film of sound, song, and dance in the dust is a total treat. Mainly about generations of women connecting through family traditions, it creates a new bond  between grandmother and granddaughter. A beautiful short film.
